History

Mitre Lodge was conceived by a group of like minded Freemasons' who wanted an M.M. Taylor's ritual Lodge, local to Wickham Bishops, as they lived in the area, and many of the Founders' Lodges were based in Chelmsford, Harlow, London, and Orsett.

After many months of discussion, at the Mitre Public House in Wickham Bishops, where the Landlord Ray Ibbotson, a very keen and well known Freemason  had discovered them, a proposal was put to the Provincial Grand Lodge.

The name Mitre Lodge was suggested from the Bishop's Palace in Wickham Bishops, (part of which is still standing), where the Bishops of London resided during the plague. It is a misnomer that the Lodge was named after the Pub!

Quite surprisingly the proposal and name were accepted reasonably quickly, and Mitre Lodge No 9307 was Consecrated on the 31st May 1989.

The Lodge is based at the Masonic Hall in Witham, it meets 5 times a year on the third Thursday of October, November, January, March and May. October is the Installation Meeting and in January the Lodge has a superb Burns Night Festive Board!

The Lodge also meets regularly for Instruction and Rehearsal, and a good social time is had at the Lodges of Instruction, which are held 8pm every Thursday at Maldon Constitutional Club, the Rehearsals are held at the Witham Masonic Hall on the two Thursdays preceding each Meeting.

There is a good age range in the Membership, from our youngest member aged 33 to our oldest member aged 85, and after 28 years 9 Founders are active in the Lodge, 4 are Officers. With the Organist, who is one of them, having served for 27 of those 28 years, and he was the Master of the Lodge in his gap year!

We are very active in supporting charities and some of these are:- Abandoned and Destitute Children's' Fund, Anthony Nolan Appeal, BLESM (British Limbless Ex-Serviceman's Association),  Donation of a Blood Pressure Monitor to the local Surgery, Broomfield Hospital Stroke Unit, Broomfield Hospital Stoma Care Nurses, Cancer Research UK, 8 Aid, Essex Air Ambulance, Grand Patron Essex 2011 Festival, Donating to Essex 2022 Festival, Farleigh Hospice, Felix Fund, Freemasons' Grand Charity, Handicapped Children's Pilgrimage Trust, Help for Heroes, Heybridge Scouts, Lifelites, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Meningitis Research Foundation, Plume School, Province of Essex Flood Relief, etc.
