Bernie Smith's remarkable year as Master of Sibelius Lodge

A great example of Freemasonry’s core values being demonstrated by an Essex Freemason

Bernie Smith, the Worshipful Master of Sibelius Lodge No. 9448, has truly exemplified the spirit of Freemasonry throughout his year in office. His devotion, enthusiasm, and charitable efforts have left an indelible mark on the lodge and its members, as well as the community at large. Bernie dedicated his year to raising funds for a cause close to his heart - Little Havens Children’s Hospice - and his innovative approach to charity and Freemasonry has inspired all who had the privilege of joining him on this journey.

From the very beginning of his tenure, Bernie injected a sense of fun and excitement into lodge meetings, donning his signature sequin jackets and introducing the highly anticipated ‘Bernie’s Box’. This initiative quickly became a lodge favourite, as brethren eagerly participated for the chance to unlock the mysterious box. By finding the correct key, members could win its exciting contents, and in turn, contributed to Bernie’s fundraising efforts. Not only did this creative activity raise spirits during meetings, but it also raised much-needed funds for the hospice.

One of the highlights of Bernie’s year as Worshipful Master was his Ladies’ Night, held at the Hutton Masonic Centre. The event saw a packed house, with brethren, their partners, and friends coming together for a night of celebration and entertainment. Bernie’s flair for organisation and his commitment to making the evening memorable ensured that everyone had a fantastic time. The evening was not just a social success, but also another opportunity to raise funds for Little Havens, furthering Bernie’s charitable mission.

However, the most impressive moment of Bernie’s year came when he pushed himself beyond his comfort zone for a cause he believed in. Despite being petrified of heights, Bernie courageously took part in a sponsored skydive, once again raising money for the children’s hospice. His bravery and determination were evident as he completed the challenge, showing the true meaning of dedication and selflessness.

Thanks to his unwavering efforts and the support of his fellow Freemasons, Bernie was able to present a cheque for £11,181 to Little Havens Children’s Hospice this October. The substantial donation will go a long way in supporting the incredible work the hospice does for children and their families.

Bernie Smith’s year as Worshipful Master stands as a shining example of what it means to be a Freemason. His commitment to charity, creativity in fundraising, and willingness to go above and beyond for a worthy cause have not only benefited Little Havens but also inspired everyone in the Sibelius Lodge and beyond. Bernie’s leadership and generosity have left a lasting legacy, and he is truly a great example of a Freemason at his finest.
