Essex Freemasons support Havens Hospices at Southend Half Marathon

Essex Freemasons join hundreds of volunteers who helped deliver one of the county's most successful fundraising events

Essex Freemasons were proud to support this year's Southend Half Marathon, joining hundreds of volunteers who helped deliver one of the county's most successful fundraising events in aid of Havens Hospices.

With more than 3,000 runners taking to the streets, the Southend Half Marathon has raised over £1.6 million across its 30-year history. The event showcases the very best of Essex, bringing together participants, supporters and volunteers in aid of a truly worthwhile cause.

Haven Hospices provides specialist care and support to babies, children and adults living with complex or incurable conditions across Essex. Through Fair Havens and Little Havens, the charity helps individuals and families make the most of every day, offering care, respite and emotional support when it is needed most.

Freemasons and their partners from across South Essex, including Southend, Shoeburyness, Basildon and Thurrock, came together to back the event, assisting with preparations ahead of race day before cheering runners at the finish line. With warm weather adding to the challenge, Masonic volunteers were on hand throughout the afternoon, offering water, refreshments and words of encouragement to participants completing their challenge.

For the volunteers, one of the most rewarding aspects of the day was witnessing the immense sense of achievement as runners crossed the line. Behind every participant was a personal story, whether running in memory of a loved one, raising funds for hospice care, or tackling a personal milestone for a cause close to their heart.

David Barton, Community Engagement Lead for Essex Freemasons, said:

"One of the greatest benefits of volunteering is the opportunity to connect with people from all walks of life. Throughout the day we met runners, supporters and fellow volunteers, all brought together by a shared desire to support an incredible local charity. It was inspiring to see so many people giving their time, energy and effort to help others. Days like this remind us that even the smallest acts of support can contribute to something truly special."

Paul Tarrant, Provincial Grand Master for Essex, added:

"I am incredibly proud of the members and their partners who volunteered at this year's Southend Half Marathon. Their willingness to give their time in support of Havens Hospices demonstrates the very best of Freemasonry in action; visible, inclusive and making a positive difference within our communities."

Essex Freemasons have supported Havens Hospices for a number of years through fundraising, volunteering and the donation of arts and crafts resources. Members have also backed festive initiatives, including the charity's Christmas tree recycling scheme, helping to raise additional vital funds.

Essex Freemasons extends its warmest congratulations to every runner, volunteer and organiser involved in delivering such a fantastic event, and thanks Havens Hospices for the opportunity to support this inspiring day.
