Remembered for his larger-than-life character, a popular Essex Freemason passed to Grand Lodge Above on 16th February 2021. As a Freemason and a father, Christmas and Charity went hand in hand for the late Alexander John Badman.  When considering ways to pay tribute, his Loxford Lodge No 5621 brethren at Upminster were inspired by Alex’s son Harry, a Master Mason in the Lodge, to hold an in-specie ‘Secret Santa’ Alms Collection at their meeting on TUESDAY 14TH DECEMBER 2021.

Instead of the usual alms collection, brethren and their guests will be asked to donate ‘in-specie’ with a new Christmas gift for a critically or terminally ill child at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, where a team of 23 play specialists and nursery nurses work hard to support children during their stay to help keep anxiety, fear and stress levels to a minimum.

The specialist Play Team organises daily activities to maintain each child’s level of development during illness, help deal with their feelings, prepare children for hospital procedures, encourage peer group friendships and organise parties and special events such as Christmas. Ellie Bridges, a Community Relationship Coordinator with Addenbrookes Charitable Trust, is delighted Essex Freemasons are going to be ‘Secret Santas’ for children needing specialist care and away from home at Christmas.

Ellie has asked the Masonic Secret Santas not to wrap the presents as all must be checked for suitability to match each gift to a child or young person. This means each present will go to the child who will gain the most from the donation and receive a gift that they like. The ages of the patients are from a few days old to 16 years which should be considered when donations are chosen. Some of the children have limited mobility and/or have special educational needs so may need toys that have music, sound or lights.

The late Alex Badman was Worshipful Master of Loxford Lodge in 1995 and 2011 and promoted to Past Provincial Assistant Grand Director of Ceremonies in 2001, followed by promotion to Past Provincial Senior Grand Deacon in 2009 and Past Provincial Grand Sword Bearer in 2017. He was a member of three other Lodges including Essex Masters Lodge No 3256. In Royal Arch he was the First Principal of Loxford Chapter in 2003, Past Provincial Assistant Grand Sojourner in 2010 and promoted to Past Provincial Deputy Grand Sword Bearer in 2016. Alex also held Provincial Grand Rank in other Masonic Orders.

Mike Moisley, the Charity Steward of Loxford Lodge said “All Secret Santas coming to this special Lodge Meeting will be made welcome. There is plenty of parking for sleighs at Upminster Masonic Hall. With traditional carol singing at the festive board everyone will have a great time and know their gifts will help critically and terminally ill children have a Happy Christmas”. Mike added “This is a Masonic Secret Santa Night; the presents are known but the recipients are a secret!”
