At a recent charity Italian night held at Padrino’s in Westcliff, ‘Take Heart’ the Southend and District Cardiac Support Group received a record donation of £6,406.66 from just one source.

This donation came from the members of Ashingdon Lodge 9026 whose current Worshipful Master (WM), Bobby Berwick together with his wife Laura, nominated ‘Take Heart Southend’ as their chosen charity for Bobby’s time in the chair. Due to Covid, Bobby’s "year" as WM turned into three, resulting in this wonderful amount being raised.

Paul Halley also a Freemason and Chairman of Take Heart said “Bobby approached us about three years ago to find out what we do and with his wife Laura attended some of our meetings and events. I also attended a couple of his meetings to give his members a talk on the work that Take Heart do locally. Unfortunately, Laura lost her father six years ago to a sudden heart attack at the tender age of 64 and she wanted to support a local heart charity in his memory. She came across Take Heart and was very happy to support us during her husband’s time as Master of his Lodge”

Take Heart’s latest appeal is their Pearl Appeal, which is to raise £30,000 by March 2023 to celebrate 30 years of supporting cardiac patients locally. Paul continued saying “like many Charities, donations and fundraising events dried up over the last couple of years due to Covid but, Take Heart survived better than most as it is run entirely by volunteers. We are now getting back to normal, and this generous donation has put us back on track to reach our target by March next year. We now stand at £24,500 and with luck and the continued support of other lodges, clubs, and groups we will get there."

The members of the Ashingdon Lodge have certainly proved that 'Freemasons are all Heart.'
