Freemasons inspired by youth spirit at Essex Jamboree

A coming together of over 7,500 people from around the world that left the Provincial Executive in awe by the sheer scale of the event

Members of the Provincial Executive visited the Essex International Jamboree on Wednesday, 31st July at Roxwell, near Chelmsford– and were left in awe by the sheer scale of the event – staged in what was effectively a small town, said to be bigger than any other village in the county.

As guests of the Essex Scout Association, the Executive were able to witness how the organisation had built a tented village spread over a massive 35-acre site – to create a temporary global community of scouts and guides and hundreds of adult volunteers.

Led by Paul Tarrant, Provincial Grand Master (PGM), the party, which included his Deputy PGM, Nick Franklin, and other members of the Provincial executive, were given a tour of the complex by fellow Freemason and Chief Leader, Bob Dye.

The Jamboree, which is held every four years, is home to over 7,500 people from around the world – and included a wide range of attractions, challenges and fun events alongside thousands of multi coloured tents, marquees and essential infrastructure.

The PGM commented, “We were absolutely blown away by the sheer scale of this incredible event. To see thousands of young people together, making friends, learning new skills, and having the time of their lives is truly inspiring. The potential for personal growth and development here is immense.

There is a close affinity between Freemasonry and Scouting – in fact it would be fair to say that many of our members used to be scouts themselves and have continued to act as volunteers in later life.”

For the Executive, the visit was a powerful reminder of the energy and optimism of youth and left the Jamboree, inspired by the young people they met at an event that showcased the transformative power of shared experiences and the importance of investing in the next generation.
