Dedicated to Service: Essex Freemasons Receive Prestigious County Honour

In a moment of great pride for the Province, Essex Freemasons have been honoured with the Essex High Sheriff’s Award, one of the most prestigious civic honours that can be awarded in Essex.

The presentation took place on Friday 30 January 2026, when the Julie Fosh, High Sheriff of Essex, presented the award to Paul Tarrant, Provincial Grand Master, with Elliott Chevin, Assistant Provincial Grand Master, and David Barton, Provincial Community Engagement Lead, in attendance.

The award recognises individuals and organisations whose service has made a lasting and meaningful difference to community life. The office of High Sheriff is the oldest secular role in the county, appointed annually by the Sovereign, and carries centuries of royal authority and responsibility for justice, community, and public service, making this recognition especially significant.

The certificate records that the award was given “in recognition of great and valuable services to the community”, words that reflect not a single act, but years of quiet, consistent dedication. Across Essex, Freemasons have worked tirelessly, often unseen, to support families in crisis, young people in need, care homes, schools, foodbanks, veterans, environmental concerns, and countless local causes.

Provincial Grand Master Paul Tarrant commented:

“This award is a huge honour for Essex Freemasons, and we are grateful to the Essex High Sheriff, Julie Fosh, for recognising the importance of service within our county.

The award belongs to the members of Essex Freemasonry who give their time and care, supporting neighbours, helping the vulnerable, and strengthening their communities through steady, practical service. All without seeking recognition, but with a strong community spirit.”
