Essex Freemasons Pledge £425,000 to Charities Ahead of Historic 250th Anniversary

As Essex Freemasons prepare to celebrate 250 years of charitable service in 2026, they have announced a bold and forward-looking initiative, pledging £425,000 to five carefully selected charities as part of a county-wide programme called Essex 250.

Launched by the Provincial Grand Master, Paul Tarrant, the initiative embodies the Freemasons’ core values of compassion, service, and community. Each chosen charity has demonstrated not only the importance of its work, but also the potential to deliver long-term, sustainable impact for people across Essex.

Among the key beneficiaries is Friends of Essex and London Homeless (FOELH), a grassroots, volunteer-run organisation that provides hot meals, essential supplies, and vital support to individuals experiencing homelessness. As part of a wider £100,000 commitment to homelessness-related causes, Essex Freemasons have already provided FOELH with a brand-new outreach van, fully insured and covered for servicing and breakdowns for two years. In addition, they’ve supplied thermal food bags to help keep meals warm during distribution and funded a suite of volunteer training programmes, including food hygiene certification, mental health first aid, safeguarding, GDPR compliance, and fire safety.

Members of the Essex Provincial Charity Team recently joined FOELH for an evening outreach session, lending a hand in preparing and distributing food, and witnessing first-hand the real-world difference their support is making. The visit reinforced the importance of empowering local charities through practical and long-lasting assistance.

In response, FOELH shared a heartfelt message:

“The donation of our brand-new van has been a gift beyond our wildest dreams. Being selected as one of the five charities for the Essex Freemasons 250-year anniversary celebrations is an incredible honour. Your support has renewed our strength, morale, and hope for the future.

Much love — Team FOELH”

FOELH is just one of five organisations receiving support through Essex 250. Others include Headway in Colchester, which is expanding its brain injury rehabilitation centre; Essex First Responders in Chelmsford, who will receive new emergency response vehicles and ongoing support; Essex Wildlife Trust, which is developing a new reforested site at Abbotts Hall Farm; and Teddies for Loving Care (TLC), who will receive £25,000 in celebration of their own 25th anniversary in 2026.

The Essex 250 programme is being led by the Provincial Charity Team, who are continuing to work closely with each beneficiary to shape long-term, meaningful projects. With just over a year until the anniversary, Essex Freemasonry is demonstrating that a legacy is not something left behind; it is something built, day by day, with action, intention, and heart.
