An historic transformation ceremony re-dedicating the Chapter of XV No. 9944 to the Combined Sports Chapter of Essex

On Friday, 17th January, at the Braintree Masonic Centre, Howard Hall over 60 members and guests came together to witness a significant and rarely seen event—the re-dedication ceremony of the Chapter of XV No. 9944, marking its transformation into the Combined Sports Chapter of Essex. This momentous occasion celebrated the union of sports enthusiasts from across the Province and showcased the enduring fellowship and shared values of the Royal Arch.

The ceremony commenced with a warm welcome for nine joining members representing the Cricket, Macnab, and Essex County Golf Lodges. The names of seven Exaltees from the sporting feeder lodges were also announced, signifying the Chapter’s growth and the enthusiasm of its members. This harmonious blend of tradition and fresh energy set the tone for a truly memorable day.

The re-dedication was performed with great dignity by the Most Excellent Grand Superintendent (MEGS), Paul William Tarrant, accompanied by his executive team led by Martyn Cartwright, Provincial Director of Ceremonies. Demonstrating the unity and commitment of the Royal Arch, Paul Tarrant assumed the chair of the Chapter’s First Principal, while the Provincial team, including esteemed members Phillip Campbell, (Past) Second Provincial Grand Principal, and Dennis Baum, Third Provincial Grand Principal, occupied key offices with precision and poise.

Dennis Baum delivered an engaging oration that captivated the audience. His address eloquently reflected the rich heritage and enduring significance of the Royal Arch within Freemasonry, leaving a lasting impression on all present.

Following the completion of the re-dedication, the transition to the Combined Sports Chapter of Essex was formally celebrated. The Deputy Grand Superintendent, Peter Hollingsworth, presided over the installation of Mike Hall (Lodge of XV) as the First Principal, conducting the ceremony with heartfelt sincerity and excellence. Phillip Campbell installed Robert Hollier (Macnab Lodge) as Second Principal, while Dennis Baum installed David Knapp as Third Principal. The Provincial Director of Ceremonies, ensured the smooth installation of the remaining officers, exemplifying the discipline and harmony that characterise the Royal Arch.

The festive board that followed was a fitting conclusion to the day’s events. Members and guests enjoyed an exceptional dining experience, with delicious food, outstanding service, and an atmosphere alive with camaraderie. With over 60 attendees, the evening was a true celebration of the values of unity and friendship that underpin the Royal Arch.
