Saxon Hall installation of Solar Panels: Efficient and green energy use

Saxon Hall leads the way in taking a Sustainable Pathway to Energy Independence

Installing solar panels at Saxon Hall, the Southend Masonic Centre is a forward-thinking move to harness renewable energy. With the global push to cut carbon emissions and reduce dependency on fossil fuels, solar power stands out as a sustainable solution. It not only benefits the environment but also helps households and businesses achieve energy independence and lower utility costs. Saxon Hall is the first Masonic centre in the Province of Essex and possibly one of the few in the UK to fully commit to renewable energy.

Solar energy comes from the sun's radiation, converted into electricity or heat. Photovoltaic panels, or solar panels, capture sunlight and turn it into usable energy via the photovoltaic effect. This technology is popular worldwide for its efficiency, scalability, and ability to provide clean, reliable energy.

A full site assessment was conducted to determine the suitability for their location and factors such as tilt angle, shading, and sunlight exposure were evaluated and a 5000 square foot area immediately behind the centre was deemed the perfect placement; originally it was considered the roof would be the obvious choice, but this was found unsuitable.

The area was cleared and tidied by the Centre manager, Robert Potter with a team of volunteers following which the bank of 110 (600 watt each) panels were installed on ground structures, being wired to an inverter, and the system connected to the Centre’s electrical network.

Once installed, and after receiving the necessary approvals after a full inspection to verify compliance with standards and performance metrics the solar energy system was activated, allowing Saxon Hall to start generating renewable energy.

The Centre manager, Robert Potter, stated, “From the moment we activated the system, we began to observe savings. Although we need to pay off the capital investment, with staff training and adjustments to some working practices, we should gradually achieve a more cost-effective source of electricity while contributing to environmental sustainability.”

Installing solar panels at Saxon Hall is a transformative step toward embracing green energy and achieving energy efficiency. By harnessing the power of the sun, the centre’s Masonic and businesses contribute to environmental preservation, energy independence, and economic savings. As we look ahead, the widespread adoption of solar panels will redefine our approach to energy consumption, creating a cleaner and more sustainable future for generations to come.
