Earlham welcomes a New Generation: The Initiation of Taylor Chevin

The Deputy Provincial Grand Superintendent proudly takes the role of Junior Deacon for the initiation of his son

In the early summer of 2023, on a sun-drenched Sunday morning, a significant conversation unfolded in a tranquil garden. It was here that Elliott Chevin, Deputy Grand Superintendent and Russell Segal, Secretary of the Earlham Lodge No. 7266, over several cups of strong coffee, discussed the future of his son, Taylor. At just 16, Taylor was already being considered for a journey into Freemasonry, a path that his father Elliott and late grandfather Gerald Chevin had proudly walked. It was decided that Taylor would be initiated into the esteemed Earlham Lodge after his 18th birthday.

Fast forward to 4th June 2024, and the Masonic Temple in Chingford with 99 brethren and guests in attendance, including Paul Tarrant, Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master (PGM), his Deputies from both the Craft and Royal Arch, a host of Assistant Provincial Grand Masters (APGM), Assistant Provincial Grand Principals and many Grand Officers, gathered to witness this joyous and poignant event.

Taylor, having turned 18 just days before, was prepared for his initiation with meticulous attention to detail and the ceremony itself was a masterpiece of Masonic ritual, performed by Earlham’s finest ritualists to the highest standard. The ceremony was especially poignant as Taylor’s father, Elliott Chevin, took on the role of Junior Deacon, adding a personal and heartfelt touch to the proceedings. Although Taylor's paternal grandfather, Gerald Chevin, had sadly passed away last year, his presence was felt in spirit. Taylor was supported by his maternal grandfather, Michael Lewis, who attended the ceremony, making it a family affair steeped in tradition and love.

As Taylor entered the temple, he was warmly greeted by his father, a gesture that undoubtedly calmed his nerves and made his introduction to Freemasonry even more memorable. The acting Worshipful Master, Mark Abrahams, concluded the ceremony with a sincere and heartfelt welcome, delivered with a touch of humour that resonated with everyone present.

The celebrations continued at the Festive Board, where brethren enjoyed a night of exceptional food and camaraderie. The Initiate’s explanation was delivered to Taylor by another skilled ritualist from Earlham Lodge, and the evening concluded with the traditional Masonic circle. The toasts flowed, including a touching tribute from Michael Lewis to his newly initiated grandson. Taylor’s response was heartfelt and enthusiastic, showcasing his confidence and potential as a future leader within the fraternity, following in the esteemed footsteps of his father and grandfathers.

The evening was not just about ceremony and celebration; it also had a charitable aspect. Over £1,600 was raised and will be distributed to local charities, embodying the Masonic values of charity and community support.

The initiation of Taylor Chevin into the Earlham Lodge was a remarkable event, celebrating continuity, family, and the timeless values of Freemasonry. It marked the beginning of a new chapter in Taylor’s life and reaffirmed the lodge’s commitment to nurturing future generations of Freemasons.
