The role of the Almoner has evolved. No longer confined to visiting the sick or infirm, today the Almoner is the compassionate heart of the Lodge, safeguarding the wellbeing of every Brother and helping to ensure no member feels forgotten or unsupported.

Many resignations do not arise from dissatisfaction with Freemasonry itself, but from personal challenges such as illness, bereavement, financial hardship, or social isolation. A proactive Almoner, supported by his Lodge, can identify these difficulties early, offer discreet assistance, and connect members to the right support. In doing so, he transforms moments of vulnerability into moments of brotherhood.

A Lodge with an engaged Almoner is more than a meeting place, it becomes a true support network. Regular contact, genuine interest in members’ lives, and a culture of care within the Lodge make it far more likely that Brethren remain active, committed, and proud of their membership.

What we will do

  • Encourage every Lodge to appoint a proactive, well-supported Almoner.
  • Provide training and resources to help Almoners offer effective and discreet support.
  • Promote a culture where every Brother shares responsibility for the wellbeing of others.
  • Encourage Lodges to maintain regular contact with members, especially those absent from meetings.
  • Recognise and celebrate the work of Almoners who help retain members and strengthen Lodge bonds.

Success will mean

  • Members feel valued and supported during times of difficulty.
  • Lodges are seen as caring communities, not just meeting places.
  • Fewer resignations due to personal challenges or isolation.
  • A stronger, more compassionate culture across the Province.
