Community engagement is where the values of Freemasonry are made real. Beyond charitable giving, it means Lodges, Chapters, and Centres playing an active role in the towns and neighbourhoods where they meet - showing the public that Freemasonry is a visible force for good.

For members, this means living out our principles through volunteering, supporting local initiatives, sharing skills, and forming partnerships that respond to real needs. By opening our Centres to wider community use, Freemasonry becomes a natural and valued part of local life.

This work strengthens bonds between Brethren, applies our teachings to daily life, and gives members pride and purpose. It ensures our Centres are recognised as true community assets -places that host meaningful events, support collaboration, and bring people together.

Community engagement benefits both society and Freemasonry. Lodges that are active and visible earn respect, attract new candidates, and strengthen their place in local life. Under the leadership of W. Bro. Elliott Chevin, Executive Lead for Community Engagement, our aim is to make this work a natural part of Essex Freemasonry across the Province.

What we will do

  • We will encourage every Lodge, Chapter, and Centre to develop community initiatives shaped by member interests and local needs.
  • We will support partnerships with schools, charities, councils, and community groups to deliver lasting benefit.
  • We will help members share their skills and experience in education, wellbeing, mentoring, and practical support.
  • We will encourage Masonic Centres to act as community assets by hosting events and welcoming local people.
  • We will work with the Communications team to promote successes and show the positive role of Freemasonry.
  • We will promote collaboration between Masonic Orders to reflect inclusivity, unity, and shared purpose.

Success will mean

  • Stronger, more visible links between Freemasonry and local communities.
  • Lodges, Chapters, and Centres recognised as welcoming places where good things happen.
  • Centres valued as community assets, hosting events and partnerships that bring people together.
  • Members proud to share their skills and experience to make a difference.
  • Communities benefitting from new opportunities and support.
  • Greater public understanding of Freemasonry as a trusted, community-focused organisation.
  • Membership growth inspired by the values and impact seen in action.
