Essex Freemasons strengthen cancer care on World Cancer Day
Mid and South Essex Hospitals charity highlight the role of key Freemasons in championing the Spotlight Radiotherapy appeal
On World Cancer Day, the Essex Freemasons are being celebrated for their exceptional commitment to the Spotlight Radiotherapy Appeal, having collectively donated over £77,000 to date. Their ongoing contributions are playing a key role in significantly advancing Southend Hospital’s ability to provide cutting-edge cancer treatment and improve patient outcomes, with even more support anticipated as fundraising continues.
The Spotlight Radiotherapy Appeal, launched in February 2023, aimed to raise £600,000 for surface-guided radiation therapy (SGRT) devices, which reduce radiotherapy session times and enhance patient comfort. Thanks to widespread community support, including the Essex Freemasons’ generosity, the appeal exceeded its initial target ahead of schedule. With an updated target of £875,000, the additional funds will allow the purchase of another SGRT attachment, complementary immobilisation devices, and environmental enhancements for the Radiotherapy Department at Southend Hospital.
Kayley Donovan, Fundraising Appeals Manager for Mid and South Essex Hospitals Charity, highlighted the role of key Freemasons in championing the cause. “Last year, I had the privilege of speaking with Freemasons Brian McGuiness and Dr. Marcus Lester. Both have been tireless advocates, sharing the benefits of completing this appeal far and wide within their community. Their dedication has been instrumental in the success we’ve achieved so far.”
The Freemasons’ efforts align with the meaning of World Cancer Day—a time to unite, raise awareness, and take action against one of the world’s leading health challenges.
Brian McGuiness, Essex Lodges Appeal Coordinator for Masonic donations to ‘The Southend Hospital `Spotlight` Radiotherapy Appeal’, shared, “This appeal resonates deeply with our values of compassion and community service. We are proud to play a part in bringing transformative cancer treatment to Essex.”
The appeal’s impact extends far beyond its initial goal, as the ongoing support of groups like the Essex Freemasons ensures a brighter future for cancer care in the region. For more information about the Spotlight Radiotherapy Appeal, visit www.spotlightappeal.org.
Every year, Essex Freemasons raise and donate around £1 million to more than 700 different charities. Freemasonry in Essex thrives with money raised at social events, by raffles and similar competitions within lodges, alms collections, etc., However, while it is a charitable organisation it is only one part of Freemasonry and members are always encouraged never to give more than they can afford.
